INSIGHT #2 - uSE ANGER IN A POSITIVE WAY
READ: Pages 43 to 46
| |
Have you ever met someone who “makes fun of everything”?
What does Rudy think of that type of person?
What was Barry Alvarez’s challenge at the University of Wisconsin?
Compare Barry Alvarez’s challenge at Wisconsin to Rudy’s challenge
at Notre Dame.
Do you think you will ever have a challenge in your life that will have
similar difficulties?
Describe the qualities that Barry Alvarez looked for when hiring his assistants.
Explain why he favored these qualities instead of looking for people who
knew only “the X’s and O’s.”
How and why do you think the movie Rudy inspired the Wisconsin football
players before their game with Ohio State?
Describe what Rudy said in his talk to the Wisconsin football players.
Can you think of anything else that you might have said to the Wisconsin
football players to help motivate them? In other words, suppose Rudy had
invited you on stage with him after his talk to further motivate the players.
What would you have said?
Have you ever been in a situation similar to the Wisconsin players where
you were in need of someone to motivate you to perform at your best? How
did you motivate yourself? Did it work? Would you do it differently now? |
LESSON 11
INSIGHT #3 - it starts with a dream
READ: Pages 49 to 52
| |
Describe the Big Dream of some of the people Rudy mentions:
Columbus, Alexander the Great, Edison, Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington,
Lincoln and Kennedy.
Explain why Rudy was sad that the boy who wrote him thought that the movie
Rudy was “lame.”
What do you think the movie Rudy is all about?
Make a list of some Big Dreams that you might want to create for yourself.
Think of one person with whom you can discuss your Big Dream without being
ridiculed or rejected. Can you think of other people who will encourage
you to pursue your big Dream?
Describe the Big Dream of Richard, the car washer.
Did Richard eventually get the job he dreamed of when he washed cars?
Did Richard actually reach his Big Dream?
*If your answer is “No,” then did Richard reach another Big
Dream that is just as fulfilling as his original Big Dream? When and why
do you think Richard changed his Big Dream?
*If your answer is “Yes,” then Richard’s original Big
Dream must not have been to get the specific job as a salesman, but to
get a highly respected career in the automobile industry. What do you think
Richard’s next Big Dream is?
Most people who pursue a Big Dream have twists and turns in their Big Dream
path the way Richard did. What was Rudy’s Big Dream when he was in
high school? Describe some of the twists and turns his Big Dream path took.
Many people told Rudy to “quit Dreaming.” How do you think
Rudy’s life and Richard’s life would be different if
they listened to those people and stopped pursuing a Big Dream?
Compare the Big Dreams of Colonel Sanders and Ray Kroc. Was it easy for
each of them to reach their Big Dream? Compare their Big Dream pursuit
with Rudy’s.
Do you think it will be easy for you to pursue your Big Dream?
Do you think you should quit when your Big Dream pursuit takes a twist
or a turn that you couldn’t have predicted? What do you think you
will do when you hit a snag in your plan? |
LESSON 12
INSIGHT #3 - it starts with a dream
READ: Pages 58 to 60, and 62
| |
What is the difference between a Big Dream and a fantasy?
Try to visualize yourself next year and respond to the following questions
with answers that are as specific as possible. (Some people find this
hard to do while others find it easy.)
*Where will you be?
*What will you be doing?
*What will be the same in your life?
*What will be different in your life?
Now try to visualize yourself in four of five years. Answer the same questions
as above.
Now try to visualize yourself as having reached your Big Dream. Answer
the same questions.
Describe Father Sorin’s Big Dream.
What were some of Father Sorin’s setbacks? Did he quit?
What are some of the lessons Rudy wants you to learn from Father Sorin’s
story?
What does Rudy mean by “change is necessary”?
Describe some of the moments in your life when it changed dramatically.
How did you feel? What was your reaction to the change? Was it positive
or negative?
What does Rudy mean by “from change comes victory”?
Visualize yourself pursuing your Big Dream. Think of something that might
change dramatically. How will you react? How would Rudy and Father Sorin
recommend you react? |
LESSON 13
INSIGHT #3 - it starts with a dream
READ: Pages 67 to 70
| |
Suppose you chose to pursue a Big Dream and you achieved
it with ease, with no struggle at all. What would that mean?
Rudy says that “it wouldn’t mean anything”. Why does
he say that?
What does Rudy mean by “to Dream is to risk”?
Have you ever taken a big risk? How did you feel? How did it turn out?
When you take a big risk again, will you approach it differently?
What big risks did Rudy take?
Did it always turn out well for Rudy?
Describe some of his setbacks.
Rudy says, “don’t take it for granted.” He means that
once you succeed, once you reach a goal that you set for yourself, no matter
how big or small, congratulate yourself. But then start dreaming again.
There are more goals to be met. Name some of your successes that you will
never “take for granted.”
When Rudy now thinks of a new project or a new goal he is confident he
can pull it off. Why? When he was younger he didn’t feel that way.
Why?
Rudy builds on his past successes. What are some of those successes?
Name some of your past successes. Can you think of ways that you will be
able to build on them?
Sometimes your successes will give you an idea for a Bid Dream. If you
haven’t done so already, try to think of a Big Dream for yourself.
As Rudy says: It starts with a Dream. |
LESSON 14
INSIGHT #4 - eliminate the confusion
READ: Pages 71 to 74
| |
Once you have decided what your Big Dream is, what is the
next step?
Rudy described how to lay out a plan by comparing it to building a house.
What are some of the things you need to construct a house?
What are some of the things you will have to do to construct a plan to
reach your Big Dream?
What do you think Rudy means by “fear of success”?
Compare your Big Dream plan with a crossword puzzle.
How will mentors help you?
Where might you find mentors?
What is the one thing Rudy says you need to know before you start out with
your plan toward your Big Dream?
Recite the sentence “It can happen” three times emphasizing
a different word each time. Discuss the different meaning of each recitation.
* IT can happen.
* It CAN happen.
* It can HAPPEN.
Do you think it was easy for Rudy to leave Joliet and go to Notre Dame?
What was Rudy’s motivation to go to Notre Dame? |
